Get Help Early

With the right treatment and support, people affected by a first episode of psychosis can and do get better.

They finish high school, graduate from college, find employment, enjoy long-term relationships and families of their own, volunteer, live independently, and more.

The opportunities for living a quality life are much greater if they receive Coordinated Specialty Care for First Episode Psychosis (CSC for FEP) as soon as possible after symptoms begin. Research shows that individuals who receive CSC for FEP early in the course of their illness have:

  • Greater ability to move forward with school, work, living independently and other life goals.
  • Better relationships with family and friends.
  • Decreased symptoms, and they may have lower rates of psychiatric hospitalization.

Individuals between the ages of 15-35 with recent onset of the symptoms below are encouraged to seek professional mental health treatment as soon as possible:

  • Hearing, seeing, tasting, smelling, feeling, or believing things that others do not,
  • Persistent, unusual thoughts or beliefs that cannot be set aside regardless of what others believe,
  • Emotions that do not fit the situation or no emotions at all,
  • Withdrawing from family or friends,
  • A sudden decline in taking care of themselves, such as not showering or eating regularly,
  • Trouble thinking clearly or concentrating.

Finding CSC for FEP in Ohio

Coordinated Specialty Care for First Episode Psychosis is a treatment approach offered by a team of mental health professionals that can include medication, counseling, family education and support, supported employment/education services, case management and other services.

The counties highlighted in the Ohio map below offer Coordinated Specialty Care for First Episode Psychosis treatment services.

To Find CSC for FEP Treatment:

  • Please refer to the list below to find contact information for the CSC for FEP  team in the county where the individual resides.
  • Obtain the individual’s permission (or the parent or guardian’s consent if the individual is less than 18 years of age) to share their name and contact information with the county treatment team.
  • You may leave a voicemail with the individual’s name and contact information on the confidential phone line. A  team member will follow up within three business days to help link the individual with treatment resources.

For counties that do not have CSC for FEP teams: Search the treatment locator for mental health treatment to get help early.

Experts from the Best Practices in Schizophrenia Treatment (BeST) Center at Northeast Ohio Medical University and the Early Psychosis Intervention Center (EPICENTER) at The Ohio State University provide training and consultation to the CSC teams.

The EPICENTER offers a Speaker Series.
