The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) oversees a statewide mental health and alcohol, drug and gambling addiction service system that consists of  50 county-based boards, as well as hundreds of community behavioral health agencies that provide addiction and mental health treatment or prevention services. 

OhioMHAS also operates six regional psychiatric hospitals that work with the county boards and community agencies to admit, treat and discharge individuals in need of acute care and community supports. Admission to these hospitals generally occurs through local com­munity mental health centers that have ar­rangements for this responsibility with the county boards and our hospitals. Patients are also referred to our hospitals by the county criminal courts when legal charges are involved.
