The Ohio Departments of Natural Resources (ODNR) and Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) together are celebrating May as Mental Health Awareness Month with the new Thrive Outside campaign partnership.
The healing benefits of time spent in nature are well-documented. Not only beneficial for physical health, evidence shows that spending just fifteen minutes outdoors also lowers stress, boosts mood, and improves sense of well-being. Therefore, the departments are joining to encourage Ohioans to get outside during the month of May to improve their mental health.
To make the outdoors more accessible, ODNR has released the DETOUR trails app. It is Ohio’s new go-to source for trail information for both to beginner and expert-trail users. App users can search for trails by region, level of difficulty, activity, type, and distance. The app offers featured routes, provides driving directions to trailheads, and includes information for trail managers.
To access the web app, visit DETOURtrails.ohiodnr.gov. For mobile devices, the app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store for free. Whether planning a trails trip from a home computer or on the road looking for spontaneous adventure, the new DETOUR trails app will make it easy to find what a great trail.
For people seeking more mental health assistance, OhioMHAS recommends offers the Ohio CareLine at 1-800-720-9616 for free emotional support. The line, available 24/7, is staffed by licensed clinicians ready to help, guide, and make referrals as necessary. They offer confidential support in times of personal or family crisis when individuals may be struggling to cope with challenges in their lives.
